The English as a Second Language Program (ESL) is offered at Kentucky State University and coordinated by Dr. Kwang H. Suh, Office of Asian Affairs. The ESL Program includes courses in writing, grammar, and conversation, employing speaking and listening skills in every class period. The ESL program coordinates with the area communities to offer students the opportunity to experience American customs and culture.
Recently, 16 South Korean English teachers from Youngsan University, Busan, South Kyongsang, South Korea, were involved in an intensive four-week program of learning English and American culture through classroom studies and field trips. On July 21, the group spent the day visiting with retired University of Kentucky Professor, Bill Berdine and his wife Stacie Meyer at their Danville, KY lakeside residence. The day included boat rides on Herrington Lake where several of students had their first experience driving a boat as well as enjoying a Kentucky-style barbecue lunch served by the hosts. During breaks from class work, the group took trips to New York and Chicago. Smaller excursions included Mammoth Cave and the Danville visit with the Berdines. They also completed a teaching practicum with children at the “Summer in the Son” program at The Frankfort Christian Academy. They left July 25 to return to families in South Korea. Additional information regarding Kentucky State University’s Asian ESL programs can be had by contacting Kwang H. Suh, Ph.D., Academic Advisor and Director for Asian Affairs,128 & 129 Hathaway Hall, Kentucky State University, Phone: 502-597-6671, Email: k.suh@kysu.edu
